Express Entry is a system used by the Canadian government to manage applications for skilled and qualified workers or traders in Canada or overseas for the Canadian Permanent Residence programs. It may involve both the provincial and federal levels of Canadian government working with Canadian employers to select foreign skilled workers and/or traders to permanently live in Canada.

Express Entry is a relatively new system and it was introduced on January 1, 2015, aiming for faster processing time. Specifically, it manages the following three key Canadian economic immigration programs:

  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC);
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP); and,
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).

From the Express Entry system, some Canadian provinces and territories may recruit candidates through their Provincial Nominee Programs to meet their immigration and economic needs.

Candidates who are eligible, qualify under one of the Canadian economic immigration programs and are interested in applying for Canadian Permanent Residence through the Express Entry system have to first create and submit a profile. If top-ranked (or nominated by a province or territory) and invited to apply for Canadian Permanent Residence, candidates have 60 days to complete and submit their application for Canadian Permanent Residence; otherwise, their invitation to apply expires and they will have to start over.

Based on the information provided in the Express Entry profile, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will then determine which of the three immigration programs (CEC, FSWP or FSTP) you are eligible for under Express Entry system. Some provinces or territories may nominate Candidates based on their immigration and economic needs; if so, candidates are invited to apply for Canadian Permanent Residence. Within six months 80% of applications for Canadian Permanent Residence under the Express Entry are usually processed, making the Canadian immigration system very efficient.

EXPRESS ENTRY APPLICATION PROCESS

STEP 1: ELIGIBILITY

Working closely with our team of immigration lawyers at Boghossian Morais LLP, we will first determine your eligibility bearing in mind the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR) and the Ministerial Instructions Respecting the Express Entry System for managing permanent resident applications.

STEP 2: CREATE AN EXPRESS ENTRY PROFILE

Once we have determined your eligibility and established that this is the correct ‘immigration avenue’ for you, we will then walk you through the process of creating an online Express Entry profile.

STEP 3: Based on your skills and experience the Canadian Government will assign you a score, according to its ‘Comprehensive Ranking System. This system assigns a maximum of 1,200 points – a core set of points up to 600 (skills/experience transferability, spousal factors etc.), and a set of additional points of up to 600 (Canadian education, job offer, nomination, family in Canada, French language skills etc.).

STEP 4: If you’ve been deemed a top candidate, then you will receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence under one of the Canadian economic immigration programs.

STEP 5: Once invited to apply for permanent residence under one of the Canadian economic immigration programs, you will have 60 days to complete your application.

Express Entry System - Canadian Entry Visa Approved

SIDE NOTE: If after 12 months you have not been selected to apply for permanent residence, then your Express Entry profile will be deactivated. In this case, if you would like to re-apply, it is recommended to work on improving your score in areas where you may have been assigned low points – such as work experience, education, language, etc., and then re-start the process.
